A new work by Katerina Jebb, which addresses the visible and invisible forces of exudation through a mediumistic installation of carnivorous plants. jebb constructs a living world where apparent stasis of the plants, presented as a tableau vivant, is actually a system in perpetual motion. Its seeming innocence and beauty a motif of catharsis, seduction, consumption and regeneration.
The still and silent, hauntingly singular phenomena of the carnivorous genus, Six species of insectivorous plants appear in varying forms and volumes. These living subjects give forth a spectacle, primarily for their own advantage and survival, seducing their prey in various and complex ways. The seemingly strange and decorative appearance of the plant belies its true nature, one that radiates energy and is resplendent in its passive aggressive structure.
“ What I find particularly compelling about the subject of the Carnivore species is their lack of need, and their natural authority. Despite the apparent abandon of their situation they are intuitive and resourceful, adversity actually enabling them to thrive and evolve. Lying beneath the subject matter, touching on the subconscious, entering the spaces of these silent and sentient presences, there is a perpetual unfolding, a metaphysical charge. I innocently presumed that I would be able to objectify and exploit their exotic properties ,contrarily the living subject matter enthralled and captivated me.
